I’m a Canadian girl living in Los Angeles. Mama bear to three little cubs, Cash 7, Raine 4 and Ever 1. My family is basically my life these days but I’m not only a mom. I host shows on TV and the Internet and I write a blog notonlyamom.ca Since becoming a stay at home mama, I have discovered I like making stuff (thank you Pinterest) and cooking (always with a recipe ;).
What is your proudest moment to date?
I am proudest when my children show genuine kindness and empathy for those around them. We carry Ziploc bags in the car full of snacks for people we see whom are in need of food and the kids love it. Another simple moment that comes to mind is when my three year old gave half his Pokemon cards to a stranger at a card trading event, because he saw that she didn’t have any and wanted to help her start her collection. It was such a sweet gesture and all without any prompting from an adult.
Do you have a favourite quote or mantra?
I’m not very religious or a part of a 12 step program but I have always liked the Serenity prayer. As I know it:
“God grant me the serenity,
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.”
“Two beers in a bucket, f&*k it!”
Favourite book and album?
I’m re-reading the Harry Potter series with my son and it is so truly magical. J.K. Rowling is a hero of mine. I think she’s amazing and inspirational and I could live happily ever after in the world she creates. I am also a sucker for historical based fiction.
Can’t pick a fave album but music that can be found on repeat at my house would be: Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, TLC, Pink, and my kids love Johnny Cash and whoever sings “Once I was 7 years old…” lol
Tell us a bit about what you do?
When I worked full time I traveled the world as a videogame journalist. I went to amazing launch events, interviewed game makers, reviewed the games, wrote magazine articles, had a team of makeup artists (best ever) and broadcast live from red carpets. Now that I am a work from home Mama, I work more full time than ever before! I’m a lot like every other mom…chef, nurse, chauffeur, coach, mediator, educator…I’m sure you get my point! When I have a minute away from the babes, I like to write and host shows. I love connecting with new people!
Have you faced any challenges getting to where you are right now?
Every day has a new challenge it seems like! Seriously though, it’s been hard for me to give up my financial independence since making the choice to be a single income family. I wasn’t used to a budget but it’s worth it to spend this time with my children. It can also be hard to physically find the time to get anything done…as I’m typing my daughter is helping herself to my boob…challenging to say the least!
What do you do to relax?
Hot baths and marathon Netflix or TV sessions. Made better with wine!
What was the last gift you gave someone?
My hubby and I went to great measures to get our kiddos a NES Classic videogame system for Christmas. They liked it but as it turns out they weren’t as pumped as we were…the games aren’t nostalgic for them!
What are your 3 best qualities?
Self promotion is not something I excel at lol…my mom would be the perfect person to answer this question because she thinks I am the best at everything. (Mom blinders).
Where is the most beautiful place in the world?
Cuddled up in bed with my family watching a good movie, eating yummy snacks, and listening to the rain outside. Then of course, there’s Hawaii…our favorite place to vacation with the kiddos…or without them actually…beach and cocktails for the win!
What bad habits do you have?
I bite my nails and I don’t eat like an adult. I looooove junk food and indulge more than I’d like to admit…even though I know how awful it is. Guilty!
If you’re feeling bad, what do you do to pull yourself out of it?
I’ve been known to sacrifice ME time, so a time out from my kiddos spent with my girlfriends always gives me a boost. Made better in a restaurant where I can order food that I don’t have to prepare…and wine…seeing a theme with me? A quick hour or two away makes me appreciate being home with my kids all the time again!
What is your pet peeve?
People who drive slow in the fast lane. Hands down!
What’s the best bit of advice you have ever received?
To live in the moment. It’s cliché but true. If we could always appreciate the moment without worrying about the past and the future, life would be a lot simpler. For me, it’s not always possible but I try to remember when life feels overwhelming.
If you could give your 16 year old self some advice, what would it be?
Giiirrrrllll, wear that short skirt and dance on that table! Study hard and play hard. Take chances.
What are your goals for the rest of the year?
As my kids get older and more independent, I have been trying to rediscover myself a little bit. For me this means working on my writing and connecting with other people. I have also begun to exercise…which is not something I love…but I think it’s been good for me. You can read about my challenges and successes on my blog.
Do you work on your mindset and what do you do?
The beach is always a good place to recharge. If I’m solo, I can enjoy the quiet and if I have the kids, I can absorb their enthusiasm and excitement!
What is the most useless talent you have?
I remember a lot of random things. Super random. Not especially helpful things!
What can we see you doing next/new projects?
I’m currently hosting an online show called Growing Exposed. Check it out!
“Thank you so much for this interview Amanda, what a brill read! i love your full admission of your love of junk food (and I imagine there will be a few people checking you out wondering how on earth you look as good as you do and still eat junk!)
Your honesty in how motherhood shifts your whole perspective is refreshing, but the work you have done since becoming a Mum proves you don’t have to stop being who you are outside of motherhood.
Also love that you love TLC and “Once I was 7 years old…” has been in my head for about two weeks!
I think you rock Amanda and people should totally check out all that you are up to right now!”
